Description

School administrators often overlook the vital role that school nurses play in the overall legal defensibility of special education programs. In this session, Attorney Erin D. Gilsbach will provide examples from caselaw and everyday practice that emphasize the importance of school nurses with regards to compliance issues such as child find, LRE, accommodations, and emergency plans. She'll explain their role in communicating with families, serving as liaison between healthcare providers and IEP/Section 504 teams, and addressing discrepancies between parent and medical reports. Plus, you'll get solutions for efficiently and effectively embedding school nurse practices into special education procedures while avoiding the overuse of resources and three simple, but essential changes school can make to improve collaboration between special education and school nursing departments.
