The Center for Ocean Mapping and Innovative Technologies hosted at the University of South Florida's College of Marine Science is a NOAA-funded collaborative agreement that delivers world-class ocean and coastal mapping technologies and approaches to efficiently map, identify and respond to a variety of threats in the world’s ocean and coastal zones. This is accomplished through: (1) the implementation of an innovative program of research, consistent with NOAA’s priorities, to efficiently map ocean and coastal realms, and provide data, predictions and products used by first responders, managers, and the public, (2) education programming that trains the next generation of mapping specialists with formal academic coursework, technical workshops and short courses for working professionals and public education and outreach capability to communicate COMIT's and NOAA’s mapping and science products to the general public, and (3) capacity expansion of NOAA and its partner organizations to respond to coastal disasters arising from extreme weather events, accidents and other threats to people, property and ecosystems in coastal areas of the United States.
