Description

With an estimated 2.5 billion to 3 billion beats over a lifetime, the human heart has a remarkable ability to adapt in response to stress and physiological stimuli. This talk will provide an overview of our understanding of the human heart, its diseases, and some of the seminal discoveries in cardiac biology. These discoveries and emerging technologies have tremendously impacted our ability to treat cardiac disease in the clinic and have offered new paradigms for drug discovery, with the potential to not only save lives and improve quality of life but also lower the economic burden associated with cardiac health care. Findings from human and animal studies, as well as novel approaches to treating cardiac disease, will be discussed.
