  • Upgraded brake pad for off-road use handles extreme heat

Leading motorcycle brake pad manufacturer, SBS Friction, now introduces an upgrade of their RSI compound with an indestructible mechanical bonding.

The upgraded RSI compound has been tested for several years and is developed with professional MX-GP rider Shaun Simpson: “Braking is also quite an important part of riding. I like to be in touch with the brakes and I ride a bit on the rear brakes, so it puts a lot of pressure into the system and the heat is just unbelievable. SBS has managed to handle this perfectly and I feel great on track using the upgraded RSI.”

The RSI product range is a performance upgrade choice of MX-GP World Championship, MX-GP and MX2 teams and riders. It is a sintered compound formulated for high thermal stability, powerful and predictable fade-free performance.

CSO Christel Munk Pedersen, SBS explains: “The upgraded SBS off-road compound is dedicated to riders who ride professionally or in dry conditions” and she continues “This upgrade is part of our commitment to going towards 100% NRS Safe in our whole product program. The NUCAP Retention System (NRS) is the most advanced mechanical attachment technology with a zero-failure rate – just where we want to be”.

NUCAP CEO Montu Khokhar comments: “The braking environment demands components that are capable of standing up to its violent vibration as well as incredible heating and cooling fluctuations. NRS Safe attachment is a mechanism that does not fail.”

SBS Friction A/S secures a 100% safe brake pad program with mechanical bonding for both ceramic and sintered brake pads.

As the first manufacturer in the motorcycle industry, SBS last year succeeded in launching a sintered material for street brake pads using NRS technology for the SP program to the global aftermarket.

Now a new range of world-leading road racing brake pads with NRS technology has been tested for a year and will be launched with a new Dynamic Racing Concept at EICMA in Milan beginning of November. Having herewith secured its position as the high standard in braking through design, quality, performance, and durability this engagement further entrenches the SBS position of market leadership.

SBS Friction, the world’s leader in motorcycle brakes in the global aftermarket, has committed to going towards 100% NRS Safe throughout its brake product line. NRS Safe products exclusively use the NUCAP Retention System (NRS), the most advanced mechanical attachment technology with a zero failure rate in over 1 Billion units Worldwide.

“There is no room for error in motorcycle braking. By going 100% NRS Safe SBS is using the absolute best in mechanical attachment enabling its riders to feel confident that they are using the safest performing brakes available,” CSO SBS Friction A/S Christel Munk Pedersen says.

“The braking environment demands components that are capable of standing up to its violent vibration as well as incredible heating and cooling fluctuations. It is well known that traditional adhesives do not handle these extremes and are prone to failure leading to detachment. NRS Safe attachment is a mechanism that does not fail,” NUCAP CEO Montu Khokhar comments.

  • New selection tool from SBS makes it easy to find the best match between bike, braking preferences and riding style

Some riders prefer more stopping power than others, some ride in dry conditions, others in wet conditions. It can be hard to find the perfect match of brake pad compound as it really is a combination of rider’s preferences, bike model and use of bike.

SBS has now made an online tool that makes it easy to find the best brake pad compound that will not only fit the right bike model, but will also match the riders braking preferences and riding style. You just need to answer 2-3 questions, and you will get the best fit right away.

After finding the right compound, you might want to use the SBS model look-up widget to find the right size of brake pad for exactly your bike model.

Both tools are available for free at www.sbsbrakes.com.
The compound selector you can access here: www.sbs.dk/about-sbs/compound-selector

  • New brake pad look-up feature from SBS enables quick identification of matching brake pad and motorcycle

Brake pad catalogues are thick as donuts and for many they are unmanageble to overview. That is the status quo for many equipment manufactories in the motorcycle industry, including SBS. To simplify the identification of which brake pads fit on different types of motorcycles, SBS have developed a model look-up feature, which is accessible through the company's website: www.sbsbrakes.com.

In the lookup feature you can also identify matching brake rotors and clutch kits.

How to use the lookup feature:

    • Go to www.sbsbrakes.com
    • Select your specific bike model, year and CCM (in random order)
    • The brake pads, brake rotors and clutch kits that match your bike will be listed (recommended and optional)

  • SBS Brake Pads for motorcycles ECE R90 approved

SBS, the largest European manufacturer of brake pads for motorcycles, has now achieved ECE R90 approvals for the most comprehensive list of products and vehicles in the industry.

Danish motorcycle brake pad manufacturer SBS Friction has now achieved a full and comprehensive ECE R90 approval, which is required for all replacement brake pads used for street riding throughout the European Union and in non-European countries that have adopted the ECE regulations.

Brake pad compounds and applications approved

SBS has received approval for all catalogue motorcycle and scooter applications back to 1969 including all brake pad shapes and compounds that can be used for street riding purposes. This means that the approval includes 10 different SBS compounds; HS, HF, HM, MS, SI, LS, SP, RQ, RS and the new RST that launched in 2020.

    Approved since 1965

CSO Christel Munk Pedersen says, “ As the largest manufacturer of brake pads in Europe we know that our brake pads are high performance quality, but we want to make sure that we always live up to the highest standards and of course fulfill all legal requirements so our customers and riders can always feel safe and secure. Our customers have approved of our products since 1965, since 1980 our brake pads have been TÜV approved and now we of course have the latest and updated approval within our industry the ECE R90.”

    The ECE R90 Approval

R90 is a state-of-the-art regulatory assurance of quality and safety for dealers and riders and requires brake pads to be tested in an inertia dynamometer instrumented for continuous recording of rotative speed, brake torque, brake line pressure, number of rotations after brake application, braking time and brake rotor temperature.

The brake pads are divided into 3 categories – A, B and C - depending on area of the friction material, and all compounds are tested individually. All vehicles recommended for the specific brake pad compound must be calculated according to the kinetic energy to find the most severe vehicle for testing. This way all compounds and vehicles are checked, and the most severe combinations tested on track, for the consumer to get a very safe and secure product.

The tests required by R90 include bedding, performance check, brake tests, cold performance equivalence and speed sensitivity tests. Under R90, replacement brake pads and brake shoes are permitted to deviate from the frictional characteristics of their original equipment counterparts by not more than 15%.

Furthermore, ECE R90 requires correct marking of the products and sealed packaging.

A factory and test equipment approval are also part of the R90 homologation. It involves engineers inspecting and accrediting the factory once a year. SBS holds the approval for both manufacturing and testing facilities.

  • Unique combination of two brake pad compounds meets different braking
    preferences in racing

After more than two years of testing, the racing brake pad compound DS-1 is now followed by DS-2 to match different braking performances. From the testing not only a new compound, but a whole new unique concept emerged: The combination of two compounds.

SBS has been actively involved in road racing at the highest level since the 1990s. Over the last 2 seasons, selected teams in the World Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3 GP, British Superbike, and World Endurance Championships have therefore actively participated in fine-tuning of the latest compound from SBS Friction A/S now launched as DS-2 Dual Sinter.

The DS-2 has been developed based on requests from riders wanting a compound with a little more human initial bite and more powerful braking power at the end of long brakings compared to DS-1.

During the development SBS received various feedback. SBS race manager Allan Østerli: “Many riders were very satisfied with the new DS-2, but some still felt that the initial bite was reduced too much compared to DS-1. On the other hand some riders who preferred DS-1, occasionally missed a little more braking power at the end of braking with DS-2. Therefore a completely new braking concept emerged: The Dynamic Racing Concept combining the strong initial bite and linear in-stop performance from DS-1 and the smooth initial bite and progressive in-stop performance from DS-2”.

The Dynamic Racing Concept makes it possible to fit the DS-1 on the left hand side brake disc and DS-2 on the right hand side brake disc, thus achieving a combination of the different performance characteristics of the two compounds. In short, a fine tuning of braking performance for the individual rider's brake preferences.

SBS riders still have different preferences and Kervin Bos, Technical Team Manager Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team and his team prefer the new DS-2 “Our partnership with SBS is a great asset for our team in the WorldSBK championship -  the support we receive and quality of the product are second to none. Our technical partnership with SBS allows us to develop the optimum brake performance to suit each rider. For us, the standout performer is SBS DS-2 brake pad”.

The cooperation between SBS and a large number of winning teams has made high demands on SBS Research and Development and has led to many titles in the World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock classes and even more titles in National Championships worldwide.
