Cystatin C stands out as a superior biomarker for both prognostic and diagnostic assessment of renal function, as cystatin C is not influenced by race and diet and is less affected by age, muscle mass and gender. Both the NKF-ASN Task Force and KDIGO now advocate for assigning cystatin C a more prominent role in estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR) together with creatinine as this gives the most accurate result. Cystatin C has the added advantage of not being influenced by race.
