Description

Providing safe food and a clean environment to a growing global population is a grand challenge. A broad range of analytical technologies is available for use in central facilities, remote locations, and directly at the site of production. This session highlights new analytical technologies and discusses rising safety concerns to shed light on solutions, which are direly needed in the future. John Spinks (MSU) sets the stage and discusses solutions for the rising concern of food fraud. Antimicrobial resistance detection in food and the environment will be presented by Patrick Mc Gann (Walter Reed Army Institute of Research). Antje Baeumner (University of Regensburg) will talk about nanotechnology for food and environmental safety and Sam Nugen (Cornell University) will discuss biotechnological strategies to enable environmental water monitoring. P. Lee Ferguson (Duke University) will present strategies to reliably discover unknown contaminants.
