Portable Spectrometers: Opportunities and Caveats

We can classify miniature or portable spectrometers into four categories: (a) completely integrated instruments, often from major analytical instrument companies; (b) miniature spectrometers embedded in consumer goods; (c) stand-alone spectrometers or spectrographs for scientific use; (d) spectrometers marketed directly to consumers. (a) Is well-established, and includes portable Raman instruments used by hazardous material technicians and portable XRF instruments used by scrap metal dealers. (b) Is an emerging field in ‘white goods’ (washing machines, vacuum cleaners) and personal care products (c) Is very familiar with spectrographs and components with well-defined specifications sold for lab use by established companies (d) Is an emerging area, with a number of start-up companies active In terms of application development, case (a) is well-defined and controlled by the instrument company; case (b) is also well-defined, and often single purpose, controlled by the consumer goods manufacturer; and case (c) produces spectra used by researchers. Case (d) is more problematic – who develops and validates those applications, and does the end user understand the limitations of the instrument and of the calibration? These themes will be explored, especially as regards application claims from manufacturers, correct operation of instruments, the operational space of any calibration or database, and analysis of homogeneous and heterogeneous samples.
