Profile

Penn State Extension’s Food, Families, and Health team focuses on educating the public in the areas of Health and Wellness, Family Well-Being, and Vector-borne Disease.

The Health and Wellness team focuses on promoting health, preventing and managing disease and disability, and decreasing health disparities among minority populations throughout one’s lifespan. Key programs include Dining with Diabetes, Let’s Cook with Extension, and LIFT (Lifelong Improvements through Fitness Together).

The Family Well-being team responds to issues facing children, youth, families, and communities in Pennsylvania. In response to the opioid crisis and in support of developing the current and future workforce, family well-being programs address the critical issue of building healthy and resilient children, youth, and families across the lifespan.” Key programs include Mental Health First Aid, PROSPERBetter Kid Care

The Vector-borne Disease team focuses on insects and related animals transmitting pathogens and causing diseases, like Lyme, West Nile virus encephalitis, and Anaplasmosis. Pennsylvania is number 1 in the country for cases of Lyme disease, and to respond to this growing concern, the vector-borne disease programs include the Tick Series webinars. These webinars provide information on protecting yourself, your family, and your pets and livestock from ticks and tick-borne diseases.
