Description

According to the BLS, more than 1 million workers suffer back injuries each year with an annual cost of $225.8 Billion according to the CDC. This will be an interactive class that provides current, accurate anatomical knowledge leveraging proprietary 3D Medical Animation to peer beneath the skin. Participants will see how exposures in lifestyle and biomechanical work methods lead to degenerative, bulging, ruptured discs. With the medical animation demonstrating “How & “Why” the injury and associated pain occurred, workers are galvanized to discontinue vulnerable work practices and replace them with preferred work methods. Research shows that worker physical capacity, particularly in core muscles, plays a significant role in back injury prevention. We will examine several successful work-hardening processes, including one distribution center measuring for 5 consecutive years the lowest injury claims. Roles of safety culture and dynamic core strengthening process will be discussed.

Track(s)

Learning Objectives

• You will learn that all injuries in structural firefighters were 700% higher in deconditioned workers compared to their higher fitness counterparts in an annual fit for duty exam.
• You will learn why a healthy spinal disc will rupture up to 11 times easier when twisting and compression force are applied.
• You will learn that the force on the lower back increases 3 times when incorrect lifting biomechanics are employed.
