Description

Opioids and many other categories of drugs are typically indicated for short-term use only. Even antidepressants, which are not considered to be addictive in the traditional sense, can be difficult for patients to discontinue. And yet, workers’ comp payers and practitioners too often see these drugs used for significantly longer than indicated. In fact, all too many Medicare Set-Aside plans include allocations for medications that should have been discontinued far in advance of the settlement! In this session, a pharmacist will discuss the appropriate use of these drugs and how to know when to de-prescribe, while a physician will look at alternatives to medication – such as meditation - that will help that patient be successful in the transition.

Track(s)

Learning Objectives

• Define the concept of de-prescribing
• Understand when weaning is necessary to discontinue a drug
• List alternatives to medications for the management of injuries
