Description

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated what was already a mental health (MH) crisis in this country. While a great deal of information is available about MH in general, information about MH from a claims perspective is limited. We mined all of The Hartford’s STD claims for a four year period (2015-2018), as well as our California WC claims over the same years, and the results are remarkably stable year over year. For comparison, we also mined ODG’s vast data trove. Whether as primary diagnoses or as co-morbidities, MH conditions significantly impact both lives and treasure. We provide the comparative data. The biggest costs are associated with comorbid conditions in WC claims. We then make recommendations for better management of these claims.

Track(s)

Learning Objectives

• Explore the similarities and differences between Group Benefits and WC with respect to age, gender, diagnoses, and costs for claims with primary MH conditions
• Evaluate the impact of MH conditions as co-morbidities on GB and WC claim durations
• Appreciate the economic impact of MH conditions both GB and WC claims, particularly as modified by age and diagnosis
