 Press Releases

  • Imagine having the ability to monitor your cows, wherever they are and wherever you are, so you can make timely decisions about health, breeding, feed management and grazing – all from your smart phone or the convenience of your office.

Today that is possible, and affordable, with SenseHub Beef, a new electronic animal monitoring solution from Allflex Livestock Intelligence.

SenseHub Beef delivers actionable information on health and wellbeing of individual cows and groups. It is useful in detecting heats, so artificial insemination can be timed for improved conception rates.

The system will also see if that cow or heifer comes back into heat. For instance, you could rebreed a heifer if the first-cycle AI did not take or see that an embryo transfer failed in a recip. Even a small increase in conception rates generates a positive return on investment.

Producers using advanced reproductive technology in their breeding herds get a highly accurate breeding window and a measure of estrus intensity, to improve heat detection and timing for breeding through AI or natural service.

The system also measures activities that are associated with wellbeing, such as rumination, feeding and motion. If these are out of the normal pattern, SenseHub Beef sends you a report to look for a certain animal that may be in distress, is seriously off feed or is having calving or other health difficulties. You can respond in a timely fashion, potentially reducing costs from death loss, animal health inputs or digestive upset.

    How SenseHub Beef works

A high-tech ear tag monitors movement and sends data to a system antenna, which can cover 40 acres. The data readers are often placed near water or feed sources, but several antennas can be linked up to cover larger areas. Tags have a three-year life and can be transferred to different animals.

Actionable data is available roughly 10 days after applying the tag. SenseHub Beef gathers real-time information on rumination, eating, activity and other parameters and reports it every 20 minutes. The system uses market-proven algorithms to analyze each animal. The reports are delivered on a dashboard to-do list in near real-time plus offer a view of detailed trend data .

SenseHub Beef empowers you to significantly improve reproductive and health management, increasing the number of calves produced and taking advantage of better intelligence on your herd.

    • Better reproduction

Precise cycling information, including highly accurate heat detection, detection of anestrus cows, and cows suspected for abortion, makes breeding more cost-effective and uses labor more effectively. AI users benefit from precise timing, while in natural-breeding herds, knowing the date of last heat, as recorded in the system, helps to predict the calving date and provides other timely information.

    • Better health management

Accurate health reports provide actionable insight on each cow for proactive health management. This is pertinent to wellbeing of the cows during the breeding, calving and weaning phases, in feed management during winter and catching cases of foot rot, pink eye and summer pneumonia during the grazing season. With many health challenges, rumination and eating are among the first things to change when other symptoms may not yet be visible.

    • Better use of time and labor

SenseHub Beef peace of mind to step away from the operation and perform other activities, knowing that you will be alerted if there is an issue. Monitoring helps you schedule labor more efficiently as well. If hired help is not feeding animals on time, that pattern will quickly be evident on SenseHub and can be corrected before lasting harm occurs. For couples that own another business or have jobs in town, or kids who are showing animals or playing sports, they can stay on top of their cow herd status while doing other things.

    • Better decision making

Having more precise information on health and breeding status allows producers to handle animals more efficiently. A team can get SenseHub reports, so your hired hand, spouse or family member each can see the same data. And, over time, SenseHub Beef gives you a feel for subtle things that are happening in your herd, so that you can make changes that help you attain your goals.

  • Catching more heat cycles in beef production can improve reproduction rates and save time.

With the new SenseHub™ Beef monitoring system, producers can detect more heats in a timely fashion and spend less time observing cattle for signs of estrus.

With better timing of estrus, more cows can be bred on time. A seminal study at Colorado State University followed animals administered an estrus synchronization protocol. Cows were monitored for standing estrus 24 hours a day or twice a day for 30 minutes.

By day 5 after estrus synchronization, 95% of animals monitored 24 hours a day were detected in standing estrus, while only 56% of animals observed for a half-hour twice a day were detected in standing estrus.

“No one can go watch their cows and heifers 24/7, but SenseHub will monitor their activity around the clock for you,” said Andy Dorn of Allflex Livestock Intelligence.

SenseHub ear tags sense micromovements associated with key animal behaviors, such as estrus, rumination, grazing, stress or health events. The tags record and transmit the data via field stations to an office computer or smart phone.

SenseHub rates the intensity of estrus and offers a breeding-window function for each cow tagged. Animals needing inspection for possible health challenges also are reported in a simple and easy format, Dorn said.

    Impact on reproduction efficiency

For several years, Allflex has been demonstrating the technology on beef operations around the U.S. These producers have been able to increase the reliability of estrus detection and reproduction in their cow herd, Dorn said.

“I know exactly the onset of estrus and can pinpoint my breeding window. This has saved 4 to 6 hours per A.I. group, which frees me to manage breeding and calf health. My conception rates increased 8% in the first year and have been 5% above average in the last two years,” said Reiss Bruning of Bruning Farms in Nebraska.

“I am able to get the benefits of manually watching heats without having to commit the hours out of my day. I can also do bigger AI groups, which has helped narrow my first-cycle calving window by 10 to 14 days,” Bruning explained.

Sam Shaw of Shaw Cattle Company in Idaho has had similar results. “We get our cows bred up better, as far as heat detection, managing labor and workforce, plus the health aspect. The added value is getting that early AI pregnancy or that ET calf in that recip. Increasing our conception rate and getting those heifers bred up right, instead of being bred by the clean-up bull or being open, that’s value for us,” said Shaw.

    Near real-time reporting

Movements recorded can be tied to adverse changes in grazing, ration or feeding protocol and response to stress, heat, weather, dystocia, aborted pregnancies, predation or other issues.

For animal health, monitoring helps Identify sick animals earlier, allowing for use of less costly medications and/or a better response to treatment, and identify cows stressed by separation from their calves.

Tags report data every 20 minutes, but also can hold data for 24 hours and then upload their data when they come into range of a SenseHub field antennae.

This controller is an easy-to-install box mounted on a post or structure. It sends data to the farm’s network of phones and office computers.

The dashboard has a simple look and basic design as a to-do list. The information also offers data visualization for producers who wish to monitor details like daily rumination, eating, animal movement or heat activity.

Dorn noted that labor shortages in the beef industry can be mitigated with remote sensing.

“Producers in other ag sectors are using ag-tech tools to make their lives easier and run their farms with lower labor inputs,” he said. “In beef production, we all are pressed for time, too. With SenseHub, you can monitor your cows in a timely manner, intervene wisely and have more time to do other things.”

  • Andy Dorn of Allflex Livestock Intelligence answers common questions about SenseHub Beef.

What is SenseHub Beef and how does it help the cattle producer?

SenseHub Beef is a new product from Allflex. Special ear tags help you know if a cow is in heat, is sick or not eating right. The reports can go to your phone in near real time. That’s why we say, cow status is in the palm of your hand.

What are producers saying about SenseHub Beef?

Whether they run larger or smaller operations, they are all busy. They like having time to do other things. Maybe they have jobs in town, run a second business, do things in their community or have active kids. They can do these things and monitor their cows, too.

How does SenseHub create value for a producer?

When it’s breeding season, SenseHub will detect when your cows come into estrus and list which are ready to breed. By getting those cows bred on time you can increase conception rates in that first cycle. The report tells you which cows are in heat, so you will know later if a few cycle back and need to be bred again. Confirmed breeding dates may also be helpful during calving season. The bottom line for many producers is increasing conception rates on higher-value A.I. calves.

    How does heat detection work?

SenseHub detects movement variation of the tagged animal. A cow or heifer coming into estrus has a big activity change. Their rumination and eating patterns also shift. The system will detect these changes. It’s a very visible spike in the activity data and a decline in rumination.

    Does SenseHub monitor health year-round?

Rumination is one of the most sensitive indicators of wellbeing. That foundation helps SenseHub alert you when a cow is in distress, off feed or getting sick and tell you to do a health check on that animal. A common concern is to monitor cows during a change of feed. That may be when cows are turned out onto green pasture, getting a batch of spoiled feed or shifting to corn stalks and being exposed to too much grain. At other times we need to stay on top of summer pneumonia or foot rot. We also have seen cases where a calf was sick and the system alerted because  the cow indicated abnormal behavior. SenseHub will detect possible problems, often before you can see any signs of them, and generate a list of cows to inspect.

How do producers take advantage of the health reports?

There are many ways to pre-empt problems with this kind of information. Calving difficulty, abortion, digestive issues from spoiled feed, animals that are down and not getting up, stress from weaning or predation, these are examples of things SenseHub will help you find. It will inform you of the need to check an animal because her eating, movement and rumination patterns have changed. The data also can show you that an animal is recovering normally or continuing to crash. You can monitor grazing during heat stress or see when pastures are running low on grass. You also can monitor feeding activity to be sure feed truck drivers are on time. With SenseHub, you pick up on subtle yet critical clues to herd status.

    How complex is this product?

SenseHub Beef is easy to use; we do the work for you. It’s designed and tested by cattle producers for cattle producers. The science behind the product is very strong. However, the interface is simple and it is easy to network your management team so you are all on the same page. As simple as a basic alert, the dashboard is the base of the program. Diving into more detailed data is up to the user and we provide it if that’s what our customer wants.

    What’s the bottom line?

Any more, it seems like there never enough time. With SenseHub, you can get more done while you’re taking time to enjoy a lifestyle we have chosen in the cattle business. We provide the information to make your day easier and more efficient.
