Description

Literacy is a civil right for all students and adults. The Oshkosh Area School District serves 9,100 students, one-third of whom are students of color. As of the 2024-25 school year, only 12% of Black students are proficient in reading compared to 57% of white students. Only 31% of Wisconsin’s fourth and eighth graders are proficient in reading, and Wisconsin has the widest racial reading gap in the nation. These outcomes are not indictments on intentions or educators, it’s a call to action for schools and communities. Oshkosh Area School District believes Wisconsin’s persistent literacy challenge is solvable. This session explores how strong leadership and school-community partnerships can confront literacy inequities and accelerate reading growth.
