  • WADSWORTH, Ohio (Aug. 28, 2019) — Environmentally-conscious architects, roofing consultants, building owners and contractors can soon do their part to improve air quality while installing low-slope commercial roofing with the first low-slope roofing solution to incorporate 3M™ Smog-reducing Granules. SOPREMA®, a leader in the roofing, waterproofing, wall protection and civil engineering industries, has worked with 3M, a company focused on applying science in collaborative ways to improve lives daily, to introduce SOPREMA’s ECO3 granule surfaced membrane for low-slope commercial roofing.

SOPREMA’s ECO3 product incorporates 3M™ Smog-reducing Granules. These granules are designed with a specialized photo catalytic coating that is activated by the sun’s UV rays.  As sunlight hits the surface of the membrane containing the smog-reducing granules, radicals are generated that transform the nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases in smog into a plant usable form of nitrogen that washes away with dew or rain.

Reducing smog (NOx) pollution can help reduce ground-level ozone.  While good ozone in the upper atmosphere protects us, ozone at ground level is a harmful air pollutant, because of its effects on people and the environment.1 With this new smog-fighting solution for low-slope roofing, the larger surface area of commercial roofs allows for an even greater potential for reducing smog (NOx).

“At SOPREMA, it’s our mission to protect people’s property, possessions and health,” said Marketing Manager Matt Davis. “Making a product like ECO3, which helps contribute to all three, plus has a positive impact on the environment, is a big win for everyone involved in the project. Working with a company like 3M to develop the first smog-reducing solution for low-slope commercial roofing just deepens our commitment to sustainability.”

SOPREMA will produce four membranes that will feature the 3M Smog-reducing Granule. This selection of membranes gives contractors multiple application options as well as reinforcement.

    BENEFITS OF VEGETATED ROOFING SOLUTIONS

    STORMWATER MANAGEMENT

Vegetated roofing systems are an effective stormwater management solution. During times of heavy rainfall, the vegetated system collects excess water and stores it as a water source for the plants. This minimizes the amount of water that is running off the building into local waterways or causing sewage overflow situations.

    URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT

When designing a roof in a city, the urban heat island effect must be taken into account. In cities that experience high temperatures year-round or even just in the summer months, it is important to find a roofing solution that cools the building and environment around it. Vegetated roofing systems offer an excellent solution for the urban heat island effect because the vegetation on the roof will absorb the heat instead of displacing it into the surrounding environment.

     AESTHETICS & FUNCTIONAL SPACE

An added benefit to a vegetated roof is aesthetics and additional functional space. By adding vegetation to a roof, it increases the design options to improve the building’s aesthetics. This also offers the opportunity to add extra functional square feet to the building, and the added amenity space will in turn increase the property value. Whether it is an apartment complex wanting to provide residents with a rooftop garden or a restaurant looking to utilize the space to provide fresh herbs, the possibilities are endless.

  • NEW HIGHLY REFLECTIVE GRANULE SURFACED ROOF MEMBRANE DEVELOPED THROUGH COLLABORATION BETWEEN 3M AND SOPREMA®

Building owners, architects, roofing consultants and contractors now have a new go-to means of addressing reflectivity codes across North America thanks to a joint effort between SOPREMA® and 3M. SOPREMA—a leader in the roofing, waterproofing, wall protection and civil engineering waterproofing industries—has worked in conjunction with 3M—a science-driven company at the forefront of innovation in a multitude of industries—to incorporate brand-new highly reflective white granules for use with SOPREMA’s SBS-modified bitumen roof membrane product line. The result is new-generation SOPRALENE® SG and ELASTOPHENE® SG modified bitumen cap sheets enhanced with 3M™ Highly Reflective Granules.

These new-generation SG cap sheets build upon the success of SOPREMA’s reflective roofing products currently on the market. New SOPREMA SG granulate-surfaced cap sheets are improved with 3M Highly Reflective Granules, bringing improved durability and an even brighter white appearance to the market. Moving forward, the new 3M ultra-reflective granule will be integrated into SOPREMA SG products to create solutions that provide the solar reflective index (SRI) ratings needed to comprehensively meet the highest U.S. and Canadian reflectivity requirements while providing the proven protection factor of multi-ply SBS-modified bitumen systems.

“We are pleased to be the first to provide this technology: a bright, reflective system without sacrificing multilayer bituminous waterproofing performance,” said Matt Davis, product manager for roof membranes at SOPREMA. “Our new SG products are not only durable and maintain their reflectance over the life of the products, but are also lighter weight for easier handling and application for the installer.”

“SOPREMA has been a strong customer for some time, and we were pleased to work with them on this innovative endeavor.  We’re proud to provide building owners with a reliable solution that is compliant with reflectivity regulations and helps reduce urban heat island effects,” said Amy McLaughlin, business director and general manager, 3M Industrial Mineral Products Division. “SOPREMA’s R&D team provided valuable insights on market and manufacturing needs and helped us conduct large-scale trials during the development of 3M Highly Reflective Granules. As a result of 3M working closely with the customer to create a solution that meets a specific market need, 3M’s new highly reflective granules exceed expectations during and after manufacturing and enable cap sheets to have high solar reflectivity levels years after installation.”

Testing of SOPRALENE® SG and ELASTOPHENE® SG membranes enhanced with 3M Highly Reflective Granules has shown an initial solar reflectance rating of 0.65, an aged reflectance of 0.62, a thermal emittance of 0.91 both initially and after aging, an initial SRI of 80, and an aged SRI of 75. The new lightweight cap sheets also feature robust opacity, protecting the asphaltic layer and extending the life span of the rooftop. The products require minimal maintenance and will be widely available, providing environmentally sustainable solutions for building owners across the country.

  • SOPREMA® AND 3M™ TEAM UP AGAIN!

WE ARE PROUD TO INTRODUCE YOU TO OUR NEWEST COLLABORATIVE INNOVATION, ECO3 GRANULE SURFACED MEMBRANES!

Inspired by the power of the trees, SOPREMA’s ECO3 granule surfaced membranes are a unique collaborative effort between 3M and SOPREMA for low slope roofing. This roofing granule is designed with a specialized photo-catalyst coating applied to the mineral that absorbs nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases in the atmosphere that are then cleaned and washed away by rainwater. This process drastically reduces the amount of ground level pollutants, decreasing the greenhouse effect and creating healthier communities.

What are nitrogen oxides (NOx) gases?

Nitrogen oxide gases are harmful and irritating gases formed by the burning of fuels. These gases are emitted by many sources including cars, trucks, power plants and other industrial production processes and then released into the air. These gases react with VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) in the atmosphere and sunlight to create what is commonly thought of today as “Smog” or Ozone. This ground level ozone or smog is unhealthy for humans, animals and plants.

How does the smog reducing granule work?

The smog reducing granule is coated with a specialized photocatalytic coating. The photocatalyst reacts in the presence of ultraviolet light (sunlight). This photocatalytic reaction absorbs the nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere and accelerates the oxidation process. This oxidation process creates water soluble ions that are washed away by dew or rainwater.

To prove the technology for use in roofing, Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory conducted a study validating the efficacy of the photocatalytic material in reducing smog and contributing towards air purification.

How effective are the smog reducing granules?

Every 3,000 square feet of ECO3 granules surfaced membrane can offset the approximate emissions generated by driving 3,000 miles per year. This calculation various depending on sunlight, humidity, and abundance of NOx in the atmosphere.

Ex: A 20,000 square foot commercial roof (200 squares) surfaced with ECO3 granule surface membrane has the ability to offset approximately 20,000 miles worth of car emissions yearly. That is the power of approximately 260 trees!
